Karuvepillai Podi       

Karuvepillai podi is a coarse powder, originating from the Indian subcontinent, Murraya koenigii is the botanical name of Curry tree. This tree produces an aromatic leaf often used in Indian cuisine. Generally these leaves are used for making tadka but, we can prepare many delicious and variety of dishes using these leaves. Karuveppilai / Curry leaves podi is the easy way to enjoy the flavours and benefit from the wonderful nutrients present in curry leaves. It is a simple and easy homemade dish. It can be served with hot steamed rice.       

Curry leaves have a natural flavouring substance with a number of important health benefits, which make your food both healthy and tasty along with giving it a pleasant aroma.

Ingredients

  •  2 bunches of curry leaves

  •  100 g gingelly oil 

  •  100 gm  of toor dal

  •  50 gm of urad dal

  •  1 teaspoon  pepper

  • 15 dry red chillies 

  • Tamarind gooseberry size

  • 1 teaspoon of asafoetida powder 

  • Crystal salt

 

   
Preparation

  1. Wash the curry leaves and pat dry them.

  2. In a pan, add toor dal, urad dal, and red chilli and roast them till the dal turns brown. Add the tamarind along with it and roast it.

  3. Roast in a medium low flame without burning it.

  4. Roast the pat dry curry leaves. 

  5. Roast the required crystal salt.

  6. Allow it to cool. 

  7. Add the asafoetida powder to the roasted items and grind everything together coarsely. 

 

       Healthy and yummy Curry Leaves Podi is ready!  Serve it with hot steamed rice.

  

 Tips / variations:  

  •  If crystal asafoetida is used, roast them in oil before grinding.

  • Adding a few cloves of garlic will give a good flavour.
