Sadham / Rice Podi

 

Sadham podi is also an instant mix powder. It is a dry powder usually served with steamed hot rice. We can use gingelly oil or ghee to mix it. This podi is a mixture of few dal varieties which gives a delicious taste. Sadham podi comes under Andhra cuisine. I love the awesome taste and aroma of this podi while served with hot steamed rice. This podi is a great treat for spicy lovers. Sadham podi is always considered as a substitute for the main course. It is a ready to use dish which will be very useful for bachelors or people staying away from home and missing home food. 

 

Ingredients

  • 50 gm  of toor dal

  • 50 gm of Bengal gram dal

  • 50 gm of moong dal

  • 35 gm roasted gram dal

  • 10 dry red chillies

  • 10 cloves of garlic with skin

  • 1 tablespoon  pepper

  • 1 teaspoon of asafoetida powder 

  • Crystal salt

 

Preparation

  • Dry roast the red chillies, toor dal, chana dal and moong dal in a kadai. Roast each of them separately.  

  • Allow it to cool.

  • Now add the roasted gram dal, pepper, asafoetida powder and salt along with the above roasted items in a mixer jar. 

  • Grind everything together coarsely. 

  • Spicy and tasty Sadham podi is ready. Serve it with hot steamed rice.

 

Tips and variations:

  • Adding a handful of curry leaves will enhance the taste and flavour of the dish.

  • This podi can be served with gingelly oil or ghee.

  • If crystal asafoetida is used, roast them in oil before grinding.

 

Shelf Life:

  • It can be stored for 2 months in an airtight container.

  • Chana dal is highly nutritious even when it is roasted or powdered or steamed. It is rich in fibre and helps to lower cholesterol.

  • Toor dal is an excellent source of folic acid and it is a great way to add protein to your diet. 

  • Moong dal is a good source of antioxidants, which may reduce your risk of chronic diseases, such as heart disease, diabetes and certain cancers. 

  • Asafoetida helps reduce bloating and other stomach problems.

  • A sesame seed reduce inflammation and helps to lower Blood Pressure.
